Whitesmoke Grill & Bar: Asian Fusion with A Modern Twist
Nestled along Campbell Street, a couple of blocks away from the famous nasi kandar restaurant Hameediyah, is this modest grillhouse which has been operating for over a year now.
With an open kitchen concept and a contemporary feel, Whitesmoke Grill & Bar aims to deliver a unique tasting experience admists a casual dining environment.
As this was our first time here, we had to try the house signature “lamb rack” served with corriander mint and bok choy.
The wine menu is very limited, we had to settle for a bottle of Chianti to pair with the red meat. I can recognize that most their wines are sourced from Asia Euro and I can say that the mark up is quite significant. For comparison, the 1L San Pellegrino is priced at RM18 which is higher than most casual dining restaurants would charge.
For starters, we ordered Spicy Squid with garlic, chili padi and charred lemon and grilled brinjals.
Following the Merdeka weekend, every RM63 spent entitles you to a free plate of starter, either the duck char siew or grilled prawns. We were able to redeem 4 plates thanks to this offer.
We ended our meal with their coconut ice cream with red bean and a Penang Sour cocktail. We were grateful to receive a complimentary white wine & raisin ice cream served in a martini glass.
The Whatever Menu, an 8-course Omakase where the chef decides the menu depends on the freshest ingredients available on the day. The Whatever menu is available upon pre-order with a minimum of 2 sets priced at RM78. You may enjoy with wine pairing for an additional RM78.
The Verdict
First impressions are good. The food is flavorful with creative presentation and service was good. The lamb rack was delicious and I enjoyed the coconut ice cream dessert too. Overall good value for money. UOB credit cardholders enjoy an additional 15% off on food.
However, if this place seek to elevate its dining experience, it should improve on its wine menu which is dissapointing and leaves much to be desired. There is potential here but some serious work needs to be done. Worth a try!
