Penang’s premium grocery retail scene is about to receive a boost with the addition of Village Grocer opening soon. Once dominated by hypermarkets, premium grocery outlets such as Jaya Grocer and Mercato have successfully been drawing more affluent crowds in Penang for their enhanced shopping experience and availability of imported, premium and quality produce.

Village Grocer will be opening its first outlet in Penang, located at City Junction, Tanjung Tokong alongside other dining and lifestyle outlets. Photos of a large banner has been spotted of an empty lot on the 1st floor of City Junction which reads “Fresh Landing in Penang soon”.

Along with Jaya Grocer, Village Grocer has been dominating the grocery retail in the upscale suburbs of Damansara and Bangsar in the capital city. Village Grocer’s history goes back to the 1950s, when The Food Purveyor opened a small grocery store in Gombak, Kuala Lumpur. Forty years later, it launched Pasaraya OTK and, in 2004, the premium supermarket chain Village Grocer was born in Bangsar Village. In 2017, the company acquired the B.I.G premium supermarket chain. At present, it has three Pasaraya OTK, which cater for the middle and low-income segment, 19 Village Grocer stores and seven B.I.G outlets (Source: The Edge Markets).

Looking forward to more competition in the grocery retail market in Penang. Stay tuned for more updates.
