The Michelin Guide is Coming to Penang! Here’s What to Expect
Michelin Guide is coming to Penang and you need to know what it entails
Fabulous news!
Penang is set to be the first state outside of Malaysia’s capital to receive Michelin stars. According to Yeoh Soon Hin, chairman of the state Tourism and Creative Economy Committee, the state government would sign an agreement with the Michelin Guide before the end of the year.
We can look forward to dining at prestigious Michelin Star and Bib Gourmand award restaurants at our own backyard. This is a good opportunity to showcase Penang’s promising restaurants and eateries to the most distinguished culinary guide in the world. Already a well-known food paradise in Malaysia, the Michelin Guide will cement Penang’s status as a food utopia and raise the quality and consistency of the local culinary scene.
What is the Michelin Guide? Why it matters?
The Michelin Guide is a restaurant guide that was first published in 1900 by the French tyre company, Michelin. The company began publishing guides to other countries in 1926.
The Michelin Guide is considered the most prestigious of all restaurant guides and it is often referred to as the “Bible of gastronomy”. It has been described as a “guide for gourmets” and an “international symbol of excellence”.
Michelin star is the ultimate hallmark of culinary excellence. Michelin stars are awarded to restaurants judged to be of a particularly high standard. Eateries that make the grade can be awarded one, two, or three stars, and the accolade is much-coveted by chefs around the world.
Aside from the stars, Michelin guide also recognizes eateries with exceptionally good food at reasonable rates, a feature now known as “Bib Gourmand”. In 2016, a new symbol, the Plate, was added to recognise restaurants that “simply serve good food”. Read more about the guide below.

The Michelin guide has become a universal resource for many travellers looking to locate local fare, hence it will enhance Penang’s status as a tourism destination. Just look at how Bangkok and Singapore have exposed themselves to the gastronomy world and grown leaps and bounds. Let’s hope Penang can emulate them one day!
