Maiden Mercato Supermarket Open Its Doors in Penang

Good news fellow Penangites! We are blessed to have another high-end supermarket here to present Jaya Grocer with a run for their money. Mercato Malaysia recently open its first ever outlet in Penang at Gurney Plaza, replacing Cold Storage. Both are from the same group under the Giant Supermarket (GCH Retail Sdn Bhd).

Located at the lower ground floor of Gurney Plaza, Mercato offers fine food, wines and groceries from around the world. At the time of writing, Mercato is still not fully operational as some of the sections are still under renovation, but they have opened their doors and consumers are flocking in by the droves.

[Update 20-Nov] Mercato Penang store is fully operational now. Their fresh meat area is fully stocked. Wagyu beef lovers is in for a treat as you may find a wide selection of premium Wagyu beef imported from Japan with grades as high as A5. Mercato Penang also have an aquarium with live seafood i.e. boston lobster, mantin prawn and tiger prawns ensuring you purchase the freshest seafood possible.

The Wine Section

I’m especially interested in their wine section and I’m happy to report that they offer a huge selection of wines from old and new world regions at very competitive prices. Besides, they also offer liquor, spirits and beer at attractive rates that will rival those at Jaya Grocer’s Hank’s. There are also frequent wine tasting sessions held for patrons. The other advantage is that its operating hour stretches until the supermarket closes at 10pm, compared to Hank’s early closure at 9pm.

It can only be good news for consumers like us as the competition heats up!
