With the highly anticipated launch of the iPhone 11 smartphones, Apple also unveiled the Apple Watch Series 5 which comes with a number of software upgrades over Apple Watch Series 4. Amongst the new features include the Always-on display, a built-in compass and an emergency calling feature.

Besides, the new watch is equipped with watch OS6 which offers a wider variety of health and fitness updates. Users can expect a new cycle tracking app, menstrual cycle log app and a noise app which will notify users if ambient sound reaches a level detrimental to hearing.

Disappointingly, users in Malaysia are still deprived of the eSIM, ECG and AFib features which are one of the highlights of the Apple Watch. These features were available since Apple Watch Series 4. At the time of writing, Digi and Maxis has rolled out the eSIM feature but only limited to iPhone XS, XS Max and XR models. The eSIM is a SIM card embedded in a device without the need for a physical SIM card. As such, Apple watch users can have the freedom of using services such as voice calls, SMS and mobile internet on the go without a phone nearby.

Meanwhile there is no news on the health features of ECG and AFiB (Irregular rhythm notification). These features are already available in many countries including our neighbor Singapore. It requires the approval of the countries’ medical authorities before being rolled out. It remains to be seen when these features will be available in Malaysia.

So for the price of RM1,749, would you splash the cash?
